Chapter Thirty-Two

Kathryn

Alice waddled now. Kathryn marveled at it, this new way that she moved, as she watched the younger woman emerge from the pool and then walk toward her. Water gleamed in the sun on her skin, rolled off her body, curved over her enlarged chest and around the convex stomach covered in a tight one-piece swimsuit. Kathryn slid her sunglasses from her eyes, watching. The silhouette made her warmer in the summer heat.

Alice frowned at her as she reached for her pool towel, wrapping it about herself. “What are you looking at?”

Kathryn pushed her sunglasses back into place and reached for her sweating gin and tonic. “It’s attractive.”

Alice huffed and lowered herself into the pool chair. “It certainly doesn’t feel attractive.”

Kathryn smiled slyly, putting her newspaper down. She swung her legs over the chair and went to Alice, helping settle her comfortably back into her seat before leaning over her to look into those intoxicating verdant eyes. She cupped Alice’s cheek.

“We’re outside.” Alice whispered.

“No one’s around.” Kathryn responded and leaned in to press her lips to Alice’s. “God, I’ve missed you.” It had been weeks since they had last seen one another. Charles was either home or Kathryn was called to set for a minor B film where she had been cast as an aging starlet who was losing grasp of reality.

She felt as if she could relate to the character intimately most days.

There had finally been a day Frank and Charles were both away, that nothing was keeping them apart and she’d called for Alice who came, incognito, to her home looking more pregnant and filled out than before. She couldn’t recover from the image, how it struck her as so intoxicating, arousing. Their foreheads pressed together, Kathryn let her hand trail from Alice’s cheek, down over the new curve of a breast, surprised by the weight and heft of it.

Alice inhaled shakily. “Kathryn.”

The phone was ringing. Somewhere far off in the distance.

Kathryn ignored it.

She pressed her lips again to Alice’s. The warmth of the day, of her second or third gin and tonic, of Alice’s very real, very full presence made her feel emboldened. She wanted her more than ever and the way Alice moved against her made her feel that Alice wanted the same.

The phone started up ringing again.

“Should you get that?” Alice moaned, arching her back upwards as Kathryn kissed at her uncovered nipple.

“No.” Kathryn tasted pool water and Alice against her tongue.

But the phone began ringing again. It seemed more urgent this time.

“Christ.” Kathryn returned the swimsuit to its rightful position and kissed Alice. “I’ll be right back.” And she grabbed her gin and tonic and went inside.

The phone was ringing a fourth time when she reached for it. “Hello?” She asked.

“Kathryn?! Oh, Kathryn.” It was Helen’s husband.

“Ernie, what is it?” Kathryn had never heard him so upset.

Fear curled itself low in her stomach.

“Kathryn…it’s Helen.”

“No…” it was as if she already knew. She didn’t need him to tell her. “No.”

“I found her this morning.”

“No.” Kathryn heard ringing in her ears.
